INTERVENÇÃO COVID-19-MAPUTO 2020
On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 virus spread as a pandemic due to its “alarming levels of spread and inaction”, with an increase in the number of cases, deaths and countries affected. In the global crisis of the Coronavirus, the African continent is systematically presented as incapable of defending itself and dependent on international aid.
As the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, said millions of people could be infected by the Coronavirus - COVID-19 in Africa, where young people were not expected to be spared.
In a commitment to prevent the worst from happening, on March 20, 2020, the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, announced the reinforcement of measures to prevent COVID-19. In view of the evolution of the pandemic, on March 30, the President declared a State of Emergency in Mozambique.












In October 2019, the United Nations (UN) warned that Mozambique was one of the countries in southern Africa where there are 45 million citizens in severe food insecurity predicted for the following six months. If food security was already a huge concern for the country, faced with this phenomenon of crisis caused by COVID-19, many Mozambicans feared hunger even more.
The SOLIDARITY HEART – COVID 19 INTERVENTION initiative in Maputo aimed to provide food support to 2000 people in Maputo City and Province, and, in parallel, to promote training in sewing and sewing for women living in needy communities to, in a first phase, produce protective masks against COVID-19, and Integrating street youth, trained under the Solidarity Bakery initiative, in the production of bread for the Solidarity Soup and Solidarity Lunchbox initiatives | The School Lunch. By the end of July 2020, this initiative had benefited more than 2500 people in various neighborhoods of the City and Province of Maputo. Currently, this initiative benefits 2099 people in deprived neighborhoods where the economic impact of COVID19 is quite intense, namely: Costa do Sol (150 children), Hulene B (1000 people), Massaca (569 people), Michafutene (100 people) , Polana Caniço (50 Children), Pussulane (50 Children).
This initiative involved 16 women, seamstresses, in various neighborhoods of the city, more than 6,000 handmade protective masks were designed.
By the end of July 2020, this initiative had benefited more than 2500 people in various neighborhoods of the City and Province of Maputo. Currently, this initiative benefits 2099 people, in deprived neighborhoods where the economic impact of COVID19 is still felt, namely: Costa do Sol (150 children), Hulene B (1000 people), Massaca (569 people), Michafutene (100 people) , Polana Caniço (50 Children), Pussulane (50 Children).
The highest point was the recognized distinction from the “POINTS OF LIGHT” Award, which is given by the Queen Elizabeth II – United Kingdom.
Currently, the Heart Solidarity Maputo Mission – COVID19 Intervention supports 2000 people daily in the City and Province of Maputo.
