ECO-PEMBA

The population from the city of Pemba has increased in more than doubled since the insurgent attacks that started in 2017.The conflict that has already caused more than 1.3 million internally displaced people who, in addition to humanitarian support, need livelihoods, inclusion and most importantly economic and social sustainability.
The excecisse garbage is one of the most visible impacts of this population increase. Dumpsters proliferate throughout the city of Pemba, mainly in Pemba Bay.
Our strategy to reduce the impacts of waste on public health, the local economy and the environment, involves the combination of two of our economic and social inclusion strategies: SOLIDARY SOUP and GARBAGE EXCHANGE FOR FOOD SUPPORT – The ECO-PEMBA Project
In the Josina Machel neighborhood, one of the most populous in Pemba, 5,000 people will benefit from these initiatives as an incentive and motivation for waste segregation, sales, employment and business opportunities.
This initiative will involve 20,000 people/day, in four different neighborhoods, until the end of June this year.
